Within hours of Justice Lindsay’s February 10 judgment, Murdoch had telephoned Charlie Ergen at EchoStar’s headquarters in Denver to arrange a crash meeting. Three days later Murdoch flew into Denver with a team of News Corp executives to meet Ergen. His great American gamble had begun. He was days away from another one of the worst—and the best—business decisions of his life.
* * *
It was an interesting pairing in the EchoStar offices. On one side of the table was Charlie Ergen, forty-four years old, determinedly casual. Opposite him was Rupert Murdoch, the man never seen in public without a white shirt and tie. For all of his career, Charlie Ergen had done things his way. Like Murdoch he was a gambler, he challenged conventional wisdom, he had regularly put the future of his company on the line, and he ran his company like a personal fief. He ran to win. In another lifetime Ergen and Murdoch could even have been friends. But in decades of wheeling and dealing, Rupert Murdoch had never been known to forget a wrong. He took losing money very, very personally. The thing that would always niggle below the surface of any relationship between the pair was that at the auction for the 110WL spectrum twelve months before, Ergen’s poker skills had cost Murdoch $350 million—the difference between TCI’s last bid and what Ergen had pushed MCI up to. Ergen’s bidding had crippled the MCI–News Corp partnership. Murdoch would remember that for a long time.
